It is the capital of the Town Council with the same name, with the towns of Castrotierra, San Félix de la Vega, Toral de Fondo, Toralino de la Vega and Villarnera de la Vega.

It is between the rivers Órbigo and Duerna, gazing at a pre-Roman past, and the mark of the centuries is usually stressed by the presence of religious constructions, as, in this case, it is the parish church and the chapel of San Marcos (St.Mark).

It is documented since 1098 and it has been a transit zone for kings and emperors as well as a meeting point of the Roman roads of the Silver Route, and which, from Astorga, led to Braga. Nowadays, a section of this last one is still used for the transit of one of the most important votive traditions in the province of Leon: Romería de la Virgen de Castrotierra (religious pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin of Castrotierra).

HERITAGE

Church of Santa María (dedicated to Saint Mary)
It has an atrium and a portico. It is of considerable size, with a wide squared front and a steeple.

The monumental sanctuary houses the image of the Virgin of Castro. People come in Rogation every seven years, unless the draughts force to do it before, to take it to the cathedral. The Virgin is accompanied by all the banners and parish crosses of all the surrounding towns.
