Until research shows us the physical existence of the Roman road in this territory, let us be carried away with the passing of the migrating cattle of the Vizania Cañada (Historical cattle route) and the pilgrims of St. James Way, who go along it for centuries.

Its Roman past is unquestionable and this will be corroborated by the marble bust in the tower of the church of San Pedro, the beautiful mosaic, which is preserved in the Museum of Leon and the plaque devoted to the god Marti-Tileno in the museum national archaeological museum (Museo Arqueológico Nacional), the last ones discovered in a Roman villa of the area.

Its economy is agrarian, provided with a irrigation system supplied by Caño de los Cuatro Concejos. Its first name was Villar del Marco and in the fourteenth century it became known as we do today. It keeps the Chapel of el Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz. (Holy Christ of the True Cross).

HERITAGE

"Los Villares” Roman villa
It was discovered in 1848. Among other discoveries, it brought a splendid mosaic of the fourth century with the representation of the, Hylas and the Nymphs, currently in the Museum of León and the famous plaque of Marti Tileno, in the National Archaeological Museum.

Church of San Pedro (dedicated to St. Peter)

Work of rough stone, with square front and nave. In the steeple, It keeps a built-in bust probably of Mark Aurelius. The tradition attributed it to Saint Peter.

Church of El Salvador (dedicated to the Saviour)

Same design as the previous one.

Castle of Los Quiñones

It belonged to the Earl of Luna (area in León). It has a square keep with mullioned windows . It shows the coat of arms of the Quiñones, as Diego of Quiñones, Mayor Administrator of Asturias, handed it over to his son Suero, protagonist of the heroic deed of Paso Honroso tournament in Hospital de Órbigo.

FESTIVITIES & TRADITIONS

Semana Santa
Se celebra principalmente con los actos religiosos del Jueves y Viernes Santo.

La Pasquilla
Octava de Pascua. Se realiza por la tarde una procesión con la imagen de la Virgen de Secos, a la que se cantan loas a lo largo del trayecto. Terminada, se subasta un “ramo” de roscas de nieve, cuyo dinero se dedica al culto de la Virgen.

La Sacramental
Se celebraba la semana siguiente al Corpus, y ahora el primer fin de semana de agosto. Se hace procesión.

San Pedro
29 de junio. Es el patrono del pueblo.

Gastronomía

Cocido, legumbres y roscas de nieve.
